UCMR 6 proposes 30 chemical contaminants to be monitored in drinking water between 2028–2030. AccuStandard has developed CRMs to support Public Water Systems (PWSs) in testing for these compounds.

What is UCMR 6?

On July 1, 2026, the EPA issued the Sixth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6), their latest proposed program for monitoring unregulated contaminants in drinking water using certain USEPA testing methods. The proposed rule covers 30 chemical contaminants including:

  • Ultrashort-Chain PFAS
  • Pesticides and Pesticide metabolites
  • Semi Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs)
  • Purgeable Organic Compounds

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requires that once every five years the EPA issue a list of unregulated contaminants to be monitored by public water systems (PWSs).

Who is Subject to UCMR 6 Monitoring?

UCMR 6 monitoring applies to public water systems (PWSs), including large systems and a representative sample of smaller systems during a 12-month period from January 2028 through December 2030.

What comes next for UCMR 6?

The EPA is moving through the rulemaking process toward a final UCMR 6 rule which is expected to be published late 2026 after the public comment period is concluded. Laboratories can prepare now by reviewing the proposed methods, evaluating their capabilities, and securing the standards and reference materials they will need before monitoring begins.
